Frontier Lady is a book by Judith Pella.
Her brother and her father have died in the Civil War.
Deborah Graham is left with a plantation and horses in Virginia.
Bereft of all family members, she is thrilled to have a connection to her family come and offer marriage to his son.
She travels to Texas on the train, and no one from the family even comes to meet her. A buggy is sent for her.
Then, when she arrives at the ranch, she soon discovers that she is not supposed to have any opinions, certainly not express them.
But, the wedding is planned for the next week and all goes forward.
On her wedding night, she realizes what she is in for, the rest of her married life. The son of the tyranical master of the ranch and the town of Stoners' Crossing, is as much a tyrant as his father. He beats her whenever he is not pleased with something.
She meets his step brother, while her husband is away with his Texas unit. They form a friendship and she begins to ride the horses again. That is what she had always loved, but had felt incapable of enjoying anymore.
The friendship turned to love and they are caught together one day, by her husband. He fights with his stepbrother and is about to shoot him, when she grabs the pistol and shoots her husband instead.
Her father in law is so enraged that he plans to get even with her by hanging her, after a mock trial. But as she steps up to the gallows, a gang of outlaws come and rescue her and take her away with them. The leader is enraged by Mr Stoner having hung his brother only a few weeks ago. |
