My pets through the years

By Mary Cherokee

We have had many animals as pets through the years.
When our kids were little we had rabbits for a very short time.
Once we had a squirrel. Our nephew brought her to us, when she was a very small. She roamed all over the house. We named her Suzy. After she got older, she learned to go out the door. One day she got her tail caught in the door and broke the end of it off. After she matured, she wanted to go back to her squirrel friends. We would go down to the trees where the squirrels lived and she would come to us. We always knew her by her broken tail. Sometimes, she would come back to the house.
We have had many dogs, only 2 we actually chose. Others were discarded along our road or we found them along some other road.
We had 1 part Doberman who was very afraid of us, when we found him. My husband fed him every day for a week or more, before he would come out of the culvert. Finally he let him come close enough to get him and put him in the truck. He brought him to the house. I sat down on the porch with him and started talking to him and petting him. He laid his head on my lap and was my dog from that time on. He had an accident and damaged his leg later and we had to have his foreleg amputated. He got along fine for years on 3 legs. Our alpha female, who is pictured, we did choose, or rather our granddaughter did. She is a large dog and loves us, and all our family with a love that surpasses understanding. Also, 1 of our friends.
I found our kitty, who is also pictured, beside the road one day. I had to talk strongly to the dogs about the baby kitty. But they love him, and never try to hurt him.
The donkeys I have already written about. There is very little more to say.
I give the animals their shots, myself. Our Vet used to let me have the rabies shots to give them, but the State got very strict about that, so I have to get them from the Farm Store, now.
