Raising donkeys

By Mary Cherokee

We got started raising donkeys when our granddaughter wanted a donkey she could ride. Well, her Dad found her one. He is a jack and broke to ride.
Anyone can ride him as long as they are not too heavy. 145 lbs is about his limit.
Donkeys are very social animals. They like to be with other animals.
Our jack didn't have any other donkey around. There were some cattle, but he was not happy. He walked the fence and brayed all the time.
I said "We have to get him a mate." My mistake. We got a pretty little jenny and she was already in foal, when we got her. About 9 months later, she foaled a jack. 13 months later, another jack, 13 months still another jack and yet again, same story. But the alpha jack decided some of the others were getting to be a threat. He tried to kill them and succeeded with one. The first foal is now almost 4 years old, and bigger than the alpha jack. He can hold his own with him.
We have him for sale, may sell him this weekend, if all goes well. We have sold the 2 year old. That was traumatic, for him and for me. Also sold the 10 month old this week. That was much easier. He followed me into the trailer.

Moral of this is do not get a jenny if you have a jack, unless you intend to go into the donkey raising business.

What an eye-opener! Who knew donkeys, such lovely gentle-looking creatures, are so like humans, obsessed with position and ego and social hierarchy!

Still, I don't think I could bear to sell one if I had one, so I guess I'd better not get any jenny if I ever get a jack. Thank you for teaching me the words "jenny" and "jack."
